9 top tips for buskers and busking on the Central Coast.
1. Be Prepared
There is nothing worse than getting to a gig and finding out you've forgotten something like a mic stand or power cord. To avoid this you should make a list of everything you need and check it twice every time you have a gig. Try Google Docs for making this all important list.
2. Thank Your Audience
If your audience claps at the end of your song by sure to thank them. If someone donates to you and throws some money into your case be sure to thank them also. This can be done by saying thanks or nodding or a big smile. This is a great way to show your appreciation and the audience will appreciate it.
3. Things You'll Need
It depends on what the gig needs but here is a list that may help you. A mic, mic lead, mic stand, picks, guitar, guitar strap, guitar lead, guitar stand, guitar strap. PA, speaker leads, speaker stands, PA power lead, picks, bottle of water, set list (list of songs you are going to play) power board, extension leads, spare strings, batteries, capo, invoice, Ipad, Ipad holder, music stand etc. If you are going to busk one of the greatest PA's available is the Roland Cube. If you need any musical gear we recommend Steve Forrest Music on the Central Coast.
4. Buskers Permit
There are many laws on the Central Coast and one of them pertains to busking. We also have two councils that have been amalgamated into one which is the Central Coast Council. You don't always need a permit as this is up to the premises so best to check out what you need. For Gosford Council areas please clink this link to find out more - Gosford Council Busking Permits. For Wyong Shire Council area please click on this link - Wyong Shire Council Busking Permits.
If you have the permission of the premises owner you don't need a buskers licence but you should always have liability insurance.
7. How To Make More Money $$$
If you have an EP or a CD this is a great opportunity to increase the amount of money you make whilst getting your music out there. People might through a few bucks in your case but if they see you have an EP to sell they might just pay the $5 to $10 extra making you more money.
5. Be On Time
Make sure you always get to your gig early. There will often be problems that you will need to solve like a dodgy lead, PA not working, traffic or getting a car park. Getting to the gig early gives you time to sort it out before your show starts. A good rule of thumb is to double the amount of time it takes you to set up. Of course it also depends on the amount of gear you have to set up. Most professional musicians get to their gig 1 hour before the show starts.
8. Have at Least 10 Songs
Try to have around 10 - 15 songs which will be around an hour worth of material or approximately 1 set. Eventually you should aim to have 3 sets of songs but when you start just aim for about 10. If there is more time than you have songs just repeat. This is ok to do when you are busking as most people have passed on after about 10 songs.
6. Liability Insurance
Insurance is part and parcel of the business these days. To insure you're covered the best and most affordable insurance company we have come across is duck for cover. Click this like to find out more -Duck for Cover insurance.
9. Have Fun!
Your audience will love it if they see your having fun and enjoying yourself. Sometimes you'll make a lot of money and other times no so much. Just remember that it is about honing your skills as a performer in front of a live audience. Just have fun as the audience will love it and you may even earn so money along the way.
